Track, Monitor and Measure Data Center Power Consumption and Cost with Avocent DSView 3 Power Manager

Real-time data enables data center managers to make more energy efficient decisions

INTEROP, LAS VEGAS, April 28, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) is introducing new power management software that enables users to monitor and measure the power consumption and energy usage of IT equipment in data centers in real time. DSView 3 Power Manager is an add-on “plug-in” to Avocent’s DSView® 3 management software – installed in thousands of data centers worldwide – that provides secure, centralized management for physical and virtual IT assets. DSView 3 Power Manager adds the ability to gather and aggregate power information, whether that be a power distribution unit, rack, or row of racks, to help data center managers improve operating efficiencies, reduce outages, and reduce overall energy consumption costs.

“Customers are often limited in what energy consumption they can measure, which effectively makes these costs considered “uncontrollable”. As we broaden our infrastructure management footprint in the data center we aim to bring greater granularity and control over power and cooling problems, allowing more accurate planning of IT infrastructure and budgets,” said Dave Perry, executive vice president and general manager of the Management Systems Business Unit at Avocent.

A recent IDC study found that the expense to power and cool the worldwide installed base of servers will grow to $44.5 billion, equivalent to 70 percent of new server spending, by 2010. Last year, an EPA study showed that in 2006, 50 percent of total data center energy consumption could be attributed to IT equipment, and about half of that to servers. Energy consumption in the data center represents a rising operational cost, but enterprises need to better understand their power usage to be more efficient, better allocate power to ensure availability, accurately budget for power costs and charge power usage to individual departments.

Avocent Simplifies IT Management Using Cisco Application eXtension Platform

IT software runs off market leading networking platform for highly secure management of servers and PCs

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., April 10, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) announced today that it has simplified IT administration by introducing a new way to manage an enterprise’s servers and PCs on the Cisco Application eXtension Platform (AXP) for the Cisco Integrated Services Router (ISR). Avocent will provide IT management software on the new Cisco AXP, which was announced today. The Avocent-enabled software running on the Cisco ISR will facilitate administration of servers and PCs from a single routing device.

“This is a unique way to bring new functionality to branch office networks, leveraging technologies from within both the LANDesk and Management Systems divisions of Avocent,” said Ed Harper, chairman of the board, Avocent. “There’s a growing need among customers to address the expensive challenge of extending IT management to all offices within an organization. This management software hosted on the Cisco AXP solution resolves those challenges and helps ensure proper control, security and compliance at every company location, thus demonstrating a proof point of the power of combined Avocent tools.”

With Avocent management software running on the Cisco AXP, customers can address the issue of consistent management of IT resources and enforcement of security policies throughout a company. Using the Cisco AXP running with Avocent software, IT administrators can use a simple, single interface to access and manage nearly any server, regardless of manufacturer, located anywhere on a network. Similar remote access is enabled to any PC or Macintosh from a single console.

"Integrating Avocent's server and PC management solution into the Cisco AXP for Cisco ISR branch routers addresses critical problems in monitoring, patching and asset tracking," said Dave Frampton, vice president of Cisco’s Access Routing Technology Group. "With the deployment of Avocent software on Cisco AXP, IT professionals will have highly secure anytime, anywhere access to servers and PCs at remote locations.”

Two types of Avocent management software will be offered with the Cisco Application eXtension Platform (AXP) module contained within the Cisco 1841, 2800 Series and 3800 Series ISRs:

MergePoint software allows IT administrators to access service processors that are embedded in servers and that enable remote access to power control, sensor readings and other server functions; and
LANDesk Patch Manager enables IT administrators to automatically discover and create an inventory of all servers, desktop and laptop PCs and Macintoshes attached to a wide-area network. The devices can then be scanned for security threats, automatically launching security patch deployments as needed.
“Before you start to consolidate and optimize branch architecture, you first must know what applications are running, how many and what kind of assets you have, and the types of services that will be needed for each branch…After building a baseline, implement remote management. As you rely on the router to carry branch services, you'll need an out-of-band solution that can help configure, back up, and reboot the device,” wrote Robert Whiteley, principal analyst and research director, IT Infrastructure and Operations, Forrester Research, Inc. in the October 2006 report The Evolving Branch Office: Intelligently Reducing Your Network Infrastructure Footprint.

The Cisco AXP on the ISR with Avocent software provides a tool for IT administrators to help reduce the mean time needed to make repairs, increase network utilization and provide better security auditing ability than any other existing solution. Avocent also announced it has joined the Cisco Technology Developer Program supporting the Cisco AXP.

“This combined solution enables IT professionals to use one console to remotely manage and secure all critical systems, including servers, as well as view every desktop on a network. We look forward to working with Cisco in the future to add additional value,” said Harper.

Avocent Helps Data Center Customers Speed Deployment of Higher Performance Serial Devices

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 18, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) today expanded its serial device management solutions allowing for faster, less expensive deployments and further easing the complexity of managing multi-vendor, multi-platform data center infrastructure. The ACS 6000 series, part of the market-leading family of Avocent console servers, are new secure highly available models that allow data center managers to discover, connect and manage infrastructure more quickly.

“As the market leader, we help our customers manage more than 2 million servers, routers and switches in data centers worldwide with our serial console servers. Our success is a result of working with our customers to develop solutions to adapt to the needs of their growing and changing environments,” said Dave Perry, executive vice president and general manager of Avocent’s Management Systems Division. “Customers have asked for help with speeding deployment and repurposing of data center assets and our ACS 6000 models meet that need while also enhancing availability and security.”

Save Time and Money
Upgrading remote management capability in the data center often requires extensive re-cabling of server racks. The ACS 6000 models are the industry’s first console servers to provide software configurable pin-outs for connecting to Cisco routers eliminating the need for expensive, time consuming re-cabling. The result is faster and simpler installation, critical for customers in the process of data center upgrades or consolidations. Auto discovery of asset hostnames saves time and money too. Rather than spend time manually locating and naming target devices the ACS 6000 auto discovers the servers and network equipment – such as routers, firewalls and switches – to be monitored, reducing deployment time by half.

Highly Available and Secure
Today’s enterprise requires flexible access options from anywhere in the world to ensure 100-percent availability of critical servers. The ACS 6000 provides a wide range of flexible access options, such as a built-in optional modem and wireless PCMCIA cards to ensure 24/7 availability. Policy-based access controls, an IT security best practice, can easily be utilized with multiple pre-determined and customizable secure access levels, data and event logging, and real-time intelligent monitoring.

In addition to the ACS 6000, Avocent also introduced the ACS 5000 series designed at a value price for mid-sized data centers that do not require full enterprise-level access and security capabilities. Both the 6000 and 5000 families enable IT professionals to remotely manage any serial device – including Linux, UNIX and Sun Solaris servers, network infrastructure, including routers, switches and firewalls, and public branch exchange (PBX) telecom equipment – from anywhere in the world. For customers seeking an integrated console to consolidate management of their IT Infrastructure all models are manageable from Avocent’s DSView® 3 management software.

“There is a growing demand for the management of serial devices not only by our largest enterprise customers, but also by the mid-market. Therefore, we created the broadest family of console servers that can meet the remote management needs of any data center environment,” said Perry.

The ACS 6000 and 5000 series will both be available this week. For more information, visit the serial and console management section of Avocent’s Web site.

Avocent First to Achieve EAL4+ Validation for All Secure Desktop Switches

Includes switches with Common Access Card support to help government computer users comply with HSPD-12

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – March 11, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (NASDAQ: AVCT) today announced its entire suite of SwitchView® SC desktop switches -- including models with secure USB Common Access Card support -- are now validated to National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Common Criteria EAL4+. These are the first and only switches to attain Evaluation Assurance Level 4+ validation and the first validated switches with CAC support available for government computer users who must comply with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12. HSPD-12 mandates a common identification and access method for U.S. government employees and contractors who log into federally controlled IT systems. Level 4+, designated as EAL 4 Augmented with ALC_FLR.2, means the products include assurance requirements beyond the minimum required for EAL4, which validates that they have been methodically designed, tested and reviewed.

SwitchView SC switches allow users, such as security analysts, to safely access data stored on multiple computers -- each operating at different levels of classification -- from just one console saving time and reducing complexity.

“Avocent secure switches provide unmatched data protection and are specifically designed for government and non-government environments where information security is essential,” said Dan Wolf, independent industry security consultant.

“NIAP certification assures our customers that they are purchasing products with the highest level of security,” said Pete Engler, product manager for secure desktop switches. “This is particularly important for our government customers and contractors who work in the DoD and intelligence communities.”

Security validation for the globally accepted Common Criteria is performed by the National Information Assurance Partnership*. In approving the CAC support models, NIAP also raised the validation level of the entire suite of SwitchView SC secure desktop switches to EAL4+.

Avocent was the first company to receive approval for secure desktop switches in 2003 under the “Peripheral Sharing Switch for Human Interface Devices” Protection Profile created in 2000. Since that time, Avocent has been first to market with a variety of entry-level and high-end secure switches that include the following features:

Secure USB support for ensuring security and data integrity. SwitchView SC switch USB ports are engineered to recognize only human interface devices such as Common Access Card readers, keyboards and mice.
Hardware security features, such as tamper evident tape, chassis intrusion detection and locked memory, to prevent access to internal components.
Custom-designed encrypted internal firmware made in the U.S. that automatically clears the keyboard buffer immediately after data is transmitted through the switch so no data is ever left in the switch.
Support for either PS/2 or USB or both.
Audio support.
DVI support. Each fully secure channel supports video connections that provide 2048 x 1536 video resolution for enhanced viewing of graphical materials, including maps, photos or drawings.

Avocent is a GSA schedule contractor, number GS-35F0264K. The switches range in price from $349 to $2495.

Avocent Launches Accreditation Program for Data Center Solution Providers

First partners receive accreditation upon completion of data center solutions training

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 3, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) launched its first VAR accreditation training program for data center solution providers, one of several initiatives planned this year to help partners further expand their Avocent expertise and offer increased value to customers. Following the initial training course, Avocent has extended certification to the following partners: Asertiv; DataConnections, Inc.; 42U; Enterprise Control Systems; International Information Systems Group; Kelly Communications Systems, Inc.; MiraPath, Inc.; NER Data Products, Inc.; Pinebreeze Technologies, Inc.; Tenzing Corporation; Trusted Networks Solutions, Inc.; and Transition Products, Inc.

“Our customers increasingly prefer to purchase products and services from their trusted partners but need those partners to be able to deliver more expertise as data centers become more complicated. By offering this intensive accreditation program to our VARs, we are raising the level of commitment to both our partners and customers” said Steve Hammond, director of channel marketing at Avocent. “This goes beyond individual technical training certifications on a specific product and delivers the bigger picture of how Avocent solutions work together in the data-center environment.”

The accreditation course is centered around Avocent’s data center solutions, including both technical training on individual products as well as training regarding the integration of solutions to deliver efficient end-to-end data center administration. Avocent solutions streamline management into a single console to help IT staff work more effectively. In addition to specialized training on industry-leading DSR® switches and Cyclades ACS serial console managers, the accreditation training program cover these unique Avocent solutions:

DSView 3® Management Software – software management platform used to access and control data center devices – both physical and virtual – in one console regardless of manufacturer or operating system
LANDesk Server Manager – an enterprise software solution used to manage and protect servers, integrates with DSView 3 software for in-band and out-of-band server and data-center management
MergePoint® service processor manager – management to leverage service processors already present in servers to enable remote server management including power and health
Cyclades PM power management devices – management that enables remote power management and control
The growing complexities and costs of managing data centers adds complexity to the way IT customers plan for and purchase equipment. A recent survey by Avocent shows 74-percent of customers who responded prefer to work with value-added resellers, with a third of the respondents stating they work with as many as 4 to 7 different VAR companies. Who they purchase through depends on what is purchased, how much is purchased, and whether services are required. The Avocent data center accreditation program is a first step toward enhancing partner programs to lessen these complexities for the customer; more program enhancements are planned during 2008.

SAS Eases Global Server Management with End-to-End Avocent Solution

DSView 3 software remotely handles 99 percent of server console management for 3,000 servers worldwide

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 27, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) today announced SAS, the leader in business intelligence software and solutions, has streamlined its global IT management by deploying Avocent data center solutions. Implementation of DSR® switches with integrated DSView® 3 management software allows SAS IT to manage the company’s 3,000 global servers from any location through a single interface. With Avocent, SAS has improved system administrator productivity by 20 percent and reduced the average response time to server inquiries and requests by 35 percent.

“Avocent is the only company that has addressed console access and power management as a whole,” said Dan Marx, IT engineer at SAS. “They have a complete, unified solution for global remote server management.”

As Marx surveyed the solutions landscape in search of an integrated, digital infrastructure management solution, he found the lack of standards presented a serious problem. IT vendors all use different out-of-band service processors with varying console access methods, and using separate server access management platforms for each standard and method can be complex and time consuming. What Marx needed was a single management platform that could address SAS’ entire server infrastructure, regardless of which standards the various components operated on. “As a global company, we’re committed to delivering standardized IT solutions that can scale and be used across geographies. Avocent was clearly making an effort to provide a total solution, pulling together IPMI (Intelligent Management Platform Interface), power management, digital switching and management software. They were in lock step with our vision for global server management,” said Marx. IPMI resides on a chip separate from a server’s operating system to provide access for power cycling a server when the OS is not operating. IPMI also provides server health data such as temperature, voltage and fan speed.

With Avocent’s digital infrastructure management solution, 99 percent of server console activities at SAS are now handled remotely through one interface: Avocent DSView 3 software. “It allows IT people like me to multitask and be more productive,” said Marx. “Instead of standing in front of a console waiting for compute tasks to be executed, I can now perform those tasks from my desktop while answering e-mails or making phone calls.” A server administrator can begin a staging project from the console desktop application, start a build, and then log in from home later that night to keep the build process moving forward. “Before, we’d often have to stay late at work to get the job done. Avocent’s DSView 3 software has significantly increased both IT productivity and staff satisfaction with the flexibility it gives them to do their work more efficiently,” said Marx.

Remote server access has also improved the security of SAS company data. With Avocent switches, significantly fewer people are physically touching the servers and Marx can control who gets virtual access. “With DSView 3, we can select the servers that a particular team gets to access – for example, creating a custom desktop view for that group and access to the servers that support that department,” said Marx. “Everyone gets much quicker and easier access to servers through IP, but we also maintain control of what they see. The benefits are significant.”

“Worldwide leaders such as SAS understand that IT innovation is imperative to maintaining a competitive edge in today’s global economy,” said Dave Perry, executive vice president and general manager of Avocent. “We’ve worked with SAS over a number of years to deliver solutions that have continually improved its global infrastructure. Implementing Avocent DSR switches with DSView 3 software has made the management of its worldwide network of servers easier, more cost-effective, efficient and secure.”

Avocent Wirelessly Delivers HD Video and Audio for Digital Signage

New MPX1500 lowers price, reduces size, and enhances manageability

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Jan. 28th, 2008 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) today introduced a new version of the Emerge® MPX extender, the MPX1500 high-definition (HD) multipoint extender, which wirelessly distributes HD content from a single source to multiple destinations. Emerge MPX extenders can be deployed for a variety of professional video applications, such as digital signage – providing panels with live content, entertainment and advertising in retail outlets, theaters, restaurants, airports, etc. The MPX1500 has added new functionality for centrally managing the MPX extender devices over the Internet.

The AV infrastructure created by the MPX extenders can be centrally accessed and controlled through a Web management interface. This latest version of the MPX extender greatly expands the status information available, enabling not only general troubleshooting of connections, but more specific details to ensure uptime and reliability. AV and IT managers can now connect to each individual transmitter and receiver to reboot, update, adjust the luminance and chrominance, change the frequency the radio transmits, and various other tuning parameters. For a widely dispersed digital signage network, this eliminates the need to send technical staff onsite for troubleshooting and repairs.

"When it comes to digital signage, Avocent provides the connectivity piece of the puzzle – we’re the only vendor who can deliver content wirelessly from a source to multiple displays, enabling broader reach and further penetration by eliminating the need for a physical wired connection to deliver audio and video," said Mitch Friend, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Avocent. "With the introduction of the MPX1500, we’ve added a number of features to make it easier for integrators to use and centrally manage their digital signage systems."

The MPX1500 receiver has a universal media port based upon a digital video interface (DVI) connector, supporting a wide range of analog and digital video formats rather than requiring separate interface modules. The new MPX extender is dramatically smaller than the previous version making mounting the device easier and more convenient.

Additional details about the MPX1500 and the entire Emerge MPX family can be found at www.avocent.com/proav. The MPX1500 is available now and priced at MSRP $995 U.S.

Demonstrations of Avocent’s New MPX1500 will take place at the Integrated Systems Europe tradeshow, Avocent booth Hall 1, Booth #I119 in Amsterdam, Netherlands January 29th – 31st, 2008; the Screen Expo tradeshow, Avocent booth #C01 National Hall, Olympia, London February 5th & 6th; the Digital Signage Expo tradeshow, Avocent booth #529 in Las Vegas, Nevada February 27th – 28th, 2008.

GAAP net sales for the fourth quarter were $155.4 million compared with $164.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. GAAP net sales for 2007 increased to $600.9 million from $519.2 million in 2006.

Fourth quarter 2007 GAAP net income was $14.1 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, in 2007, compared with $16.5 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2006. Operational net sales for the fourth quarter were $155.4 million compared with $166.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. Operational net sales for 2007 increased 15.7% to $602.7 million from $520.9 million in 2006. (See "Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures" discussion below.)

Cooper. "Sales in Europe and Asia showed a continuation of this trend in the fourth quarter. However, fourth quarter US sales were down from the prior year primarily due to lower IT spending in certain sectors of our large enterprise customer base, including financial services companies."

"Avocent's fourth quarter 2007 results were affected by lower sales in the US and increased R&D investments compared with last year," continued Mr. Cooper. "Our gross margin remained stable at 63.9% and benefited from a higher percentage of LANDesk sales that offset the lower US sales mix. Our effective tax rate was much lower in the fourth quarter of 2007 as we had an increase in international operating profits that carry a lower tax rate. We also had another strong cash flow quarter with cash from operations of approximately $41 million in the fourth quarter of 2007."

Avocent First to Deliver IPv6-compatible Server Management Solution to Federal Government

DSView 3 management software and DSR KVM over IP switches provide single platform for unified management of physical and virtual servers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Dec. 18, 2007 – Avocent Corporation (Nasdaq: AVCT) today announced that its flagship DSView® 3management software and family of DSR® KVM over IP switches are fully compatible with Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). This makes Avocent the first to offer a complete server management solution to U.S. federal government customers, seven months ahead of a June 2008 deadline for IPv6 compatibility mandated by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

The solution enables simultaneous physical and virtual server management from a single remote management IT platform.

“Avocent solutions are installed in many federal agency data centers. Achieving this milestone will assist our government customers as they accelerate their efforts to support IPv6-compatible networks. It also is significant for our customers in emerging markets where IPv6-ready IT infrastructure is in demand,” said C.C. Fridlin, P.E., director of product management. Click here to watch the video.

DSView 3 software enables secure, out-of-band, centralized management of all connected physical and virtual servers and network devices in data centers regardless of the manufacturer or operating system. DSR switches can be managed through DSView 3 software or through an on-board Web interface for BIOS-level access and control of servers over IP.

The transition from the current Internet Protocol v4 to IPv6, with its expanded addressing, improved security and support for carrying data, voice and video communications over IP, is expected to continue for several years. The Avocent solution supports both versions to help simplify the transition. In addition to the software and KVM over IP switches, the Avocent data center management platform includes serial console managers, power management devices and service processor managers that will also be compatible with IPv6 before the OMB June 2008 deadline.
